Full-Frame or Insert Window Installation
New window installation is great for improving energy efficiency, boosting curb appeal, and increasing the value of your home. While you may already know about these benefits, what you may not know is that there are a few different types of window installations to choose from. The more you know about these types of window installation, the more prepared you will be to make the best decision for your home.
The two main types of window installation are full-frame and insert. The type of window installation you choose will be determined by the age of your house, the condition of the window frame, budget, and the materials on the exterior of your home. Let’s take a look at each type of window installation.
Full-Frame Window Installation
Full-frame window installation entails removing the old window, along with the sill and all the interior and exterior trim. This is the most involved type of installation, but in some cases may be necessary to remove old rotted wood. This type of installation also has nailing fins around each side of the window so you can nail it to the exterior of the wall to make it waterproof.
The best times to use a full-frame installation are in new construction, when the old frame is rotted, or when you want to change the size or shape of your window and need a new frame. It’s also a great opportunity to install insulation around your window so your home stays cozy.
Insert Window Installation
With insert installation, the old window is removed while keeping the frame and trim intact. The new window simply inserts into the space to replace the old window without damaging the existing sill, trim, and frame. This is the best choice when the frame is in good condition and doesn’t need to be replaced. The home’s exterior remains unchanged, so it’s also a good option when the material on the exterior of the home, such as brick or stucco, would pose a problem when removing the frame and trim.
Insert windows are the quickest and easiest options, but may not always be possible when old frames are too rotted to hold a new window.
